Memorial Day is a federal holiday to honor and remember the men and women who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces. The holiday is celebrated on the final Monday of May. Memorial Day was formerly known as Decoration Day and originated after the American Civil War to commemorate the Union and Confederate soldiers who died in the Civil War. By the 20th century, Memorial Day had been extended to honor all Americans who died while in military service. Many people visit cemeteries and memorials to honor those who have died while serving their country. Many volunteers place American flags on each grave in national cemeteries. Memorial Day is not to be confused by Veterans Day, which honors the service of all military veterans. On Memorial Day, the flag of the United States is raised briskly to the top of the staff and then solemnly lowered to the half-staff position, where it remains only till noon. It is then raised to full-staff for the remainder of the day. The half-staff position remembers the men and women who gave their lives in service of their country. At noon, their memory is raised by the living, who resolve not to let their sacrifice be in vain, but to continue to fight for liberty and justice. So, remember that this long holiday weekend is not just for BBQ’s, fun and days off from work. There are people that made the ultimate sacrifice for you to have this holiday – remember to honor them.
