Wipes are Terrible for Plumbing!

Flushable wipes are great for giving you that clean feeling after you do your business but they are NOT meant to be flushed down your toilet. Don’t trust the label! Flushable wipes are marketed as biodegradable and septic-safe but most all disposable wipes won’t break down quickly enough to avoid clogging your pipes. The definition of ‘flushable’ is ‘able to flush’ and just because you can, doesn’t mean you should.

If you have damage in your pipes whether it’s from tree roots, breaks in drain lines, or corrosion, the disposable wipes can easily get caught on the walls of your pipes and cause you to have constant clogs, back-ups, and slow drains. Down the line from your home, your city’s sewage system can develop massive blockages when the wipes (along with everything else that shouldn’t be flushed) pack together causing major sewage issues that can cost millions and take days for your city to clear. Flushable wipes have caused some states to try to pass legislation to regulate the sale and use of wipes and cities have even filed lawsuits against wipe brands for damages to their municipal sewage system due to major blockages.

The 3 Ps are the only things that should go down your toilet, PeePoo, and Paper. To continue to use flushable wipes safely, consider using a diaper genie to collect and dispose of your wipes.
