Parts of a Furnace; Heat Exchanger

Heat ExchangerEvery gas furnace contains at least one heat exchanger. The heat exchanger is a series of metal coils in the furnace that are warmed by combustion gas and fire. It is designed to transport heat from exhaust fumes / flue gas into your home without introducing toxic substances into your home. The expected lifespan of a heat exchanger is 15-25 years.

If your heat exchanger cracks, it can cause carbon monoxide to leak out of your furnace causing fatal CO Poisoning. While replacement can sometimes be successful, it is more cost effective to replace the full furnace. Things to look out for are yellow flames, strange smells, discolored metals, soot build up, weird sounds, cracks/corrosion, or poor heating.
