Parts of a Furnace

Ever wonder what the parts of a furnace are?  You usually only hear about them when they fail and you are paying the repair man to fix it, so here are some of the parts and what they do.  Igniter – modern furnaces have replaced the old pilot light with a glow stick made of silicone nitride.  The glow stick only comes on when the thermostat calls for heat. Many of you might still have the old pilot light furnace.  Burner – the burner is where fuel mixes with air to create combustion. Small quantities of gas and air enter the chamber as the thermostat calls for heat. The igniter or pilot light creates an ignition source that burns the gas. Heat exchanger – the heat exchanger is located just above the burner. The heat generated from burning fuel warms the colder air inside the heat exchanger. When the temperature reaches a preset level, a blower kicks on and distributes warm air through the duct system. The duct work transfers the heated air throughout your home.
