Our weather has finally decided to change for the season! Warm days seem like they’re finally behind us for now so we need to make sure we’re doing everything we can to lower our energy costs during heating season and making sure we don’t have any water emergencies due to burst pipes.
+ Invest in heavy curtains for windows and doors to help protect from incoming drafts.
+ Keep your fireplace flue closed when it’s not in use.
+ Ensure you aren’t blocking any air registers with furniture or draperies.
+ Keep cabinet doors open where water lines exist to allow warm air flow to circulate around pipes to help prevent freezing.
+ Keep your thermostat set at no less than 55 degrees if you are away from your home for a few days and have someone periodically check on your home to ensure your heating system is functioning and there aren’t burst pipes causing damage.
+ Have annual heating maintenance completed to ensure your system is functioning at its optimum performance.
+ Routinely check and change your air filter for adequate air flow so your system isn’t using more energy to pull air into your system.
+ Let your faucets and tub spouts drip to help prevent pipes from freezing.
+ Wrap exposed pipes in your garage or crawlspace to help insulate and help protect from the cold.
If you find yourself in an emergency where your heat goes out or you have a burst pipe, first, stop the flow of water through that water line at the shutoff valve, then call us at 785-341-4193 and let us take care of your plumbing and heating emergencies!
