Composting

CompostingWhat should you compost?  Spring is right around the corner and it is time to think about gardening.  If you are composting, you will need to set up a designated compost bin or area. Once you do that, add regular garden dirt which can break down plant matter. The good composting matter should be a combo of green and brown organic material.

The green composting material can be, grass clippings, coffee grounds, house plants, fruit and vegetable scraps and yard trimmings.  Brown compost materials can be dry leaves, twigs, wood chips, straw and hay, and shredded paper and cardboard.

Once you get your compost bin started, it will need a certain amount of moisture.  One way to assure the compost is moist enough is to squeeze a pile in your hand.  If it holds together it probably has the right amount of moisture. If compost liquid drips through your fingers, it is too moist.  If the handful of compost crumbles, it is too dry. You can help reduce what goes in a landfill by composting.  De Hart Plumbing, Heating and Cooling.  Serving Manhattan Kansas, Junction City Kansas, Wamego Kansas, Topeka Kansas and some surrounding areas.
