Fire Extinguisher

If you don’t have a fire extinguisher in your home, you need to rectify that today.  If you do have one, is it the right one?  Many homes have an all-purpose ABC fire extinguisher, which is good for fires caused by wood, paper and other combustibles.  This type in the kitchen is not meant for fires ignited by oil and grease.  Since more than half of U.S. kitchen fires are caused by oil and grease, it is best to have a class BC only in your kitchen. You should  purchase an extinguisher that is marked 10-B:C or higher.  The 10 means it can handle 25 square feet which is what most experts consider enough for most kitchens.  Be sure you can lift it; bigger isn’t always better if you can’t manage it to aim it at the flames.  Look for “UL” on the label as that assures it’s performance has been lab-approved.  Finally, position it where you can reach it quickly if a fire ever erupts in your kitchen.  De Hart Plumbing, serving Manhattan Kansas, Junction City Kansas and Wamego Kansas.
