Today is the deadline to sign up for HealthCare.gov. The official sign-up deadline is 11:59 p.m. tonight. Enrollment is surging, but a technical problem caused the web site to go down for maintenance. The problem was a software bug overnight. More than 2 million people went to the sight over the weekend. Consumers were asked to leave their email while the site was down so that they could be “invited back” when the system was fixed. HHS has said that people who try to sign up and have “problems” can have additional time or what’s known as a “special enrollment period”. If you don’t want to buy health insurance, you could face a penalty administered by the IRS. The first year it will be $95 or 1 percent of a family income, whichever is higher. The penalty will go up every year and be adjusted according to inflation. So people, If you haven’t signed up for HealthCare.gov, today is the day!
