We hear about El Nino, but what causes it? It is the warm phase of warm ocean water that develops in the central and east-central Pacific Ocean. El Nino is accompanied by high air pressure in the western Pacific and low air pressure in the eastern Pacific and causes global changes in temperatures and rainfall. Because the warm pool feeds thunderstorms above it, it creates increased rainfall. While winters in the Midwest are generally warmer and drier in the winter, significantly cooler and wetter winters will occur in the northwest and the southwest United States. The effects of El Nino can affect sea life, land life and agriculture, cause human and animal disease, and cause economic impact-bad or good, depending on drought or wet weather. Typically the anomaly of El Nino can last at irregular intervals of two to five years when it occurs for seven to nine months it is classified as a “condition”, when it lasts longer it is classified as an “episode”.
