I thought since Spring is upon us, and we will be working outdoors on gardens of all sorts, we should learn something interesting about the garden hose. One story tells that the first garden hose appeared around 400 BC. The tubing was fashioned of ox intestines, connected to large water bags. Picture this, people would jump on the bags to force the water out of the tubing. Then in the 1600’s, someone stitched leather together to make a hose for Dutch firefighters. The leather wasn’t flexible and the hoses would burst while the fires raged on. Finally, in the late 1800’s B. F. Goodrich began manufacturing rubber hoses which were water-tight and flexible, becoming the trademark hoses used by firefighters all over the world. Today garden hoses are made in a variety of colors and lengths and many different kinds of attachments are available to help you spray or spread water where needed.
