Household Leaks

Household LeaksThe average household leaks can account for around 10,000 gallons of water wasted annually. A leaky faucet dripping at only 1 drip per minute can waste more than 3,000 gallons of water a year. Only around 1% of the world’s water can be used by people which includes consumption, washing and watering plants. This is why it’s important that we use water wisely and try our best to limit wasting water.

Common leaks in the home include worn toilet flappers, dripping faucets and leaking valves. Fixing leaks is usually easily corrected and can save about 10% on your home’s water bills. Leaky faucets are usually easy to detect. For a potentially leaky toilet, the easiest way to check is to add a few drops of food coloring to the tank and wait a few hours to see if the color migrates to the bowl. To check for potentially unknown leaks in your home, check your water meter! While using no water in or around the home, check the reading on your water meter, let a few hours go by, then check the meter again. If the reading has changed, you have a leak!

Annual household leaks waste nearly 1 trillion gallons of water nationwide which is about the average water usage in over 11 million homes. With only 1% of the world’s water being usable, it’s important to do our part and control our water usage. If you suspect or know you have a leak, call 785-341-4193 to schedule to have a licensed plumber assess and fix the situation and start saving you money on your water bill!
