How to Change your Air Filter

Air FilterWe talk a lot about changing your air filter for your HVAC system, but we never said HOW to. You know you need to replace the filter often. You know it will help keep the air in your home cleaner and healthier. You know regular replacement of your air filter will prolong the life of your HVAC system. And you know a dirty air filter can cause your system to malfunction and force you to pay for costly repairs. But now let’s tell you how to change your filter.

1.       The first thing you need to do is find your filter. Is it inside your furnace cabinet? Is it at the return air opening? Is it in your duct work?

2.       Pull out the older filter.

3.       Find out what size air filter you need. The best scenario is that you will find the size printed on the old filter. It should look something like 20x20x1 or 16x20x1; Length x Width x Depth. If for some reason there isn’t an existing filter, grab your measuring tape and measure the space for the filter, rounding up to the nearest inch.

4.       Get your new filter and locate the arrow on it. Correctly place your new filter where you removed the old one with the arrow pointing towards your furnace and in the direction your return air is coming into your unit.

You’re all done! Changing your air filter isn’t too difficult once you know where your filter is and how to properly replace it. But, if you find yourself having any issues or if you’re still stuck on Step 1, give us a call at 785-341-4193 to have one of our technicians come out and walk you through the process and get your HVAC system on the right track!
