Your hose bibb is your outside water spigot. It is located on the exterior of your house. Many people neglect their hose bibb until it leaks so bad that it cant be shut off anymore. Many times it does not need to be replaced and parts can be rebuilt to prolong its life. And there are times that you have no choice but to replace it.
With cold weather around the corner, there are some precautions you can take to get the hose bibb ready for cold weather. If you know where the shut off is for the hose bibb, you should turn it off for the winter. If you keep a hose attached during the summer-take it off and store it in the garage, shed or basement. Then you should purchase a foam cover from your local home and garden store to cover over the hose bibb for the winter. If you leave the hose attached over the freezing months, you could end up with a flood of water the first time you use the water in the spring.
If you live in a severe cold weather area, you may want to consider having a frost-proof hose bibb installed before cold temperatures occur. If you don’t take any of these precautions for the cold weather months don’t be surprised the first time in the spring you water the flowers or wash your car, the pipe for the hose bibb could have frozen and expanded causing a costly leak indoors.
