Repair and Replacing Your Furnace

As your furnace gets older and you start to experience more issues and repairs, there comes a time when you need to consider whether you should continue paying for repairs or opt to replace your furnace. Depending on whether you have electric heat, a gas furnace, or a heat pump, your system can last anywhere from 10-20 years depending on whether you’ve had annual maintenance completed regularly on your system and repairs have been made correctly to manufacturer specifications.

A few factors come into play when making the decision of repair and replace. The questions you should ask yourself are:

How old is my heating equipment? If your heating system is less than 10 years old, repair is usually more cost effective than replacement.

What is wrong with your home’s heating? If this is a first-time problem, repair is usually a more viable solution than replacement.

What is the cost of repair? If repair is around 50% of the cost of furnace replacement, you’re generally better off replacing the unit.
