Spring Home Maintenance

Spring has arrived and you’re probably itching to get outside and start maintaining your home and lawn. Here’s a few key maintenance tips for inside and outside of your home to get ready for Spring weather.

Do proper maintenance on your mower.

– Read your owner’s manual to ensure you are maintaining your equipment the way the manufacturer suggests (if you have misplaced it, you can most likely find the information online). Check/change your oil, inspect and replace your air filter if necessary, remove debris that has accumulated on top and underneath the blade deck, and remove and sharpen the mower blades.

Clean your gutters.

-From a ladder, scoop out any accumulated leaves or debris that may prevent water flow. Use your hose to make sure there aren’t any blockages in the downspouts that may allow accumulation of water around your home’s foundation.

Inspect your roof.

-If you’re able to, climb onto your roof and look for missing or curled shingles, rusted or pitted flashing (the sealer between joints on your roof), and cracked or missing calk around pipe collars, skylights, or any other roof penetrations.

Get maintenance performed on your air conditioning unit.

-Clean, inspect and test your AC unit to be sure that it will function properly when you’re ready to use it. Now would be a good time to change your air filter.

Check your outdoor hose bib or in-ground sprinkler system.

-When you first turn on your outside water spigot or sprinkler system, be sure to check for leaks outside AND inside the home in case any of the pipes froze and burst through the winter.

Pressure wash and reseal your deck.

-Pressure wash your deck to remove any mildew, fungus, or dirt that has accumulated since last summer, then apply a water repellent to prevent water damage and get the most life out of your deck.

Check the paint on your home.

-Look for any cracks or places where paint is chipping away to prevent water penetration that will rot the wood.
