Prepare your Plumbing for Colder Weather NOW!
Cold weather is right around the corner so you should be thinking about how the cold weather will affect the plumbing in your home. We all know that Winter here in Kansas can be very unpredictable so you should always be prepared and plan for the worst.
-Be ready for freezing water
We all know water expands when it freezes. This can cause burst pipes and costly repairs. Now is the time to make sure you have appropriate insulation and/or heat tape installed on and around pipes that are susceptible to extreme cold. Gutters and drain tile that are packed with leaves and debris are also liable to breaking and forming ice dams which can lead to damage to the walls and ceiling of your home.
-Replace your old hose bib
Burst hose bibs are the main culprit for water leaks and damage in the home. Replace your hose bibs with anti-freeze hose bibs or add an outdoor faucet cover to help prevent freezing.
-Keep your home warm
The plumbing in your home needs a warm ambient temperature so that during extreme cold spells, plumbing pipes that are located on the outer perimeter of your home won’t freeze. Keep cabinet doors (such as the ones under the kitchen and bathroom sink) open to allow warm air to flow into those spaces. If you go on vacation for a few days or weeks during the cold months, do not turn your thermostat lower than around 55-degrees. That should allow for warm enough temperatures in the home without wasting too much energy keeping your home warm while unoccupied.
