The Urinal

The urinal was patented in the U.S. by Andrew Rankin.  The patent was issued in 1866 after the Civil War, known as the upright flushing apparatus.  The device enjoyed wide popularity in large northern cities that witnessed large population explosions.  The urinal drastically reduces the amount of space required for a men’s restroom as several urinals could occupy the same square footage of a single sit-down toilet stall.  As a general rule, workers spend less time using a urinal than a traditional sit-down toilet.  Although urinals were created for usage by men, urinals for women were experimented with.  Due to the awkwardness of use and the potential obstruction of certain clothing items and the lack of a marketing campaign-female urinals never achieved popularity.
