A dirty furnace filter is one of the most common causes of furnace problems. Dust and dirt can restrict air flow. If the filter gets too clogged , the heat exchanger will overheat and shut off too quickly and your home wont warm up. If the blower is running and no heat is coming through the vents, replace the filter. A dirty filter causes soot buildup on the heat exchanger, reducing the efficiency of the furnace and can shorten the life of your furnace. Your furnace owners manual shows where the filter is and how to remove and replace it. If you use the inexpensive flat filters, change it the once a month. Inspect pleated filters once a month – hold it up to light, if you cant see light through it, replace it. If you have pets and children, you may have to change the filter more often as they generate lots of dirt and hair (fur). Your best rule is to have your furnace serviced by a professional every fall before you turn it on.
