Have you ever wondered how your AC unit keeps your home cool? Well first off, an air conditioner doesn’t make cold air, it removes the heat from your indoor air. In a process called ‘phase conversion,’ when a liquid converts to a gas, it absorbs heat, much like how the water in a pot on the stove will get hot by absorbing the heat from your stove and eventually turning the water to steam.
-Liquid refrigerant inside the evaporator coils absorb the heat from your indoor return air vent and converts to a gas as it is heated.
-Your compressor in the condenser unit outside of your home pumps the warmed gas refrigerant towards the condenser coils as well as cycles refrigerant throughout your system.
-The heated gas refrigerant passes through the condenser coils and a fan in the outside unit blows over the coils to release heat into the outdoor air and converts the gas back to a liquid by the release of its heat.
-The cooler, liquid refrigerant will pass through an expansion valve that will regulate pressure as the refrigerant flows back into the evaporator coils inside of your home. As is relieves pressure, it will rapidly cool down the refrigerant.
-The cooled refrigerant will now flow through your evaporator coils in your indoor unit. The return air blower in your HVAC system will blow the air from inside of your home over the evaporator coils and absorb the heat from your home’s air and circulate that now cooled air throughout your home.
-From here, the cycle starts again.
