Mold and Water Leaks

Mold and Water LeaksWater leaks and mold can lead to a costly cleanup.  A best practice is to get any water leaks taken care of as soon as they appear.  Standing water on the floor is easy to see.  Less obvious signs are: stains on walls, floors, and ceilings, damaged or warped flooring, warped bottom panels under sink cabinets, peeling paint or wallpaper and corrosion on plumbing valves and fittings.  In addition to the damage that water causes, it can encourage the growth of mold on surfaces and inside walls and floors – where it is not visible. Places where you might not notice mold are in ductwork, attics, crawl spaces and between walls.  A musty odor can be a sign that mold is present.

Mold can cause damage to your home and certain types of mold can lead to health problems.  Once the mold is discovered, it should be dealt with quickly.  The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommends you find and use a professional mold remediation contractor to clean up and rid your home of large amounts of a mold when it is discovered.

Annually or bi-annually you should inspect water lines, shut off valves and fittings for sinks, toilets, and tubs.  Also hoses for wash machines, dishwashers and ice makers.  Check around toilets to make sure water is not leaking at the base.  Your roof should be inspected every three years by a professional.  Keep gutters cleaned yearly.  Rain gutters that overflow or don’t drain properly will allow water to seep into your roof.  Inspecting common sources of water leaks and taking preventive measures can be an effective way to reduce the risk of water damage and mold.  De Hart Plumbing Heating and Cooling, serving Manhattan Kansas, Junction City Kansas, Topeka Kansas and some surrounding areas.
