What are Sump Pumps?

Sump pumps are a small pump that removes water.  A sump pump is installed in the lowest part of a basement or crawlspace.  It’s job is to keep the area under a building dry and prevent flooding.  Sump pumps are installed in a specially constructed pit called a sump pit.  Water flows into the sump pit through drains or by migration through the soil.  The whole purpose of the sump pump is to pump water away from the interior of the building so the basement or crawl space stay dry.

A sump pump stands inSump Pumps the sump pit with a gravel base that is dug in the lower part of a basement.  When the pit fills with water, the pump turns on automatically.  It moves the water out of the pit through pipes that are installed and directed away from your home.  The water then is drained away from the home or building foundation.  The pipe usually has a one-way valve called a check valve at the end of the pump.  This valve keeps stops water from flowing back into the pit.

How do you know if you need a sump pump?  If the area under your house such as basement or crawlspace floods or feels damp and smells musty, chances are you need a sump pump.  If your basement is warm and dry, you probably don’t need one.  There are different sizes and types of sump pumps to choose from.  If you are interested in getting some sump pump information-give us a call @ 785-341-4193.  De Hart Plumbing Heating and Cooling, serving Manhattan Kansas, Junction City Kansas, Topeka Kansas and some surrounding areas.
