Oats

The common oat, is a cereal grain grown for its seeds.  While oats are suitable for human consumption as oatmeal and rolled oats, one of the most common uses is for livestock feed.  Oats have a low tolerance to heat and prefer areas with a cooler wet climate.  Oats are an annual plant and can be planted in autumn for late summer harvest or in early spring for a early autumn harvest.  Oats have numerous food uses, most commonly they are rolled or crushed into oatmeal or ground into fine oat flour.  Oatmeal is mainly eaten as “porridge” or used in a variety of baked goods.  Oats are also used in cold cereals such as muesli or granola. In Britain, oats are used to brew certain varieties of beer. Oat straw is prized by cattle and horse producers for bedding as it has a relatively dust-free and absorbent nature.
