Exercise can enhance your brain.  In some recent studies, exercise may lower the risk for Alzheimer’s disease, and may even slow down brain aging by about 10 years.  Some researchers have found that aerobic exercise appears to improve a person’s cognitive function, while resistance training can enhance a person’s memory.  Ultimately, the research study concluded that spending 45 minutes to an hour on moderate to vigorous exercise is good for your brain.

There is a good body of research that shows that when exercise benefits the body, it also benefits the brain.  When older adults do aerobic or resistance exercise, there are changes to the structure and function of areas of the brain that are responsible for complex mental tasks and memory functions.  One study found that when people walk, the pressure of making an impact with the ground sends waves through the arteries, which increase blood flow to the brain.  Getting enough blood to the brain is important for healthy brain function.  Blood flow brings oxygen and nutrients to the brain.

Exercise can boost a person’s mood by triggering the release of feel-good chemicals and hormones like endorphins, which improve brain health.  Regular exercise may also prevent the onset of depressive symptoms.
