Memorial Day is a federal holiday in the United States. It is a day to remember those who have died while serving in our country’s armed forces. The holiday is observed on the last Monday in May. The day originated as Decoration Day after the American Civil War in 1868. By the 20th century, competing Union and Confederate holiday traditions celebrated on different days. Memorial Day eventually extended to the same day to honor all Americans who died in military service. Many people visit cemeteries and memorials and place American flags and flowers on graves in national cemeteries. Memorial Day is not to be confused with Veterans Day; Memorial Day is a day of remembering the men and women who died while serving our great country. Veterans Day celebrates the service of all military veterans. On Memorial Day, the flag is raised briskly to the top of the staff and then solemnly lowered to the half staff position, where it remains only till noon. It is then raised to full staff for the remainder of the day. The half staff position remembers those who gave their lives in service of their country. At noon their memory is raised by the living, who resolve not to let their sacrifice be in vain and to continue the fight for liberty and justice for all. Never forget the sacrifice others have made to provide you with the freedoms you have in this great country.
