Home Garbage Disposal

The garbage disposal was invented in 1927. The device was patented in 1935 and went on sale in 1940. When you use your garbage disposal, I bet you don’t think about how it reduces landfill waste. Many cities tried to prohibit use of garbage disposals fearing the food waste was a threat to city sewer systems.  Garbage disposals are widely used in North American households, but far less commonly used elsewhere. Food and food byproducts are only what should be put in the disposal. Even then it should be soft peeled foods that aren’t stringy and fibrous. Remember, what you put in it has to be able to pass through your plumbing system.
