Manholes are fitted with steps on the inner side of the wall to allow easy descent to the utility space below. The openings are usually circular to prevent the cover from falling into the hole. Manholes are generally found in urban areas under sidewalks and streets. These underground areas generally house an access point to perform maintenance on underground public utilities such as sewers, telephone, electricity, storm drains and gas.
