We all enjoy the colors of fall leaves. Did you ever wonder why a fall leaf changes color? Photosynthesis is the way plants turn water and carbon dioxide into oxygen and sugar. A chemical called chlorophyll is what gives plants their green color. As summer ends and fall arrives, the days get shorter. This is how trees know to get ready for winter. During winter, there is not enough light or water for photosynthesis. Trees will “rest” and live off the food they stored during the summer. This is when they begin to shut down their food making factories. The green chlorophyll disappears from the leaves. As the green fades away, yellow, orange, brown and red leaves appear. It is the beautiful colors of fall leaves that we see falling to the ground. De hart Plumbing, serving Manhattan Kansas, Junction City Kansas and Wamego Kansas.
