With stay at home orders in effect, a lot of us are finding time to finally get around to those ‘Honey-do’ lists and Spring cleaning. Something you may want to add to your list would be to add some preventative checks for the plumbing in your home.
-Check under the sinks
Inspect all supply and drain lines for any signs of water leaks or corrosion. Test your shutoff valves to your supply lines and make sure they are working properly and shut off the water to your fixtures completely when turned on.
-Test your outdoor hose bibs
Before you hook up your hose to water the lawn, turn on your hose bib and monitor inside of your home and look for any water leaks from your hose bibs that may have froze over the Winter.
-Inspect your water heater
Look for corrosion, leaks, puddles of water, and rust. If possible, drain the tank to remove the sediment from your water heater to help extend the life of the appliance.
-Clear gutters and downspouts
Make sure all obstructions are cleared from gutters and downspouts and that they are effectively moving water away from your home’s foundation.
-Check toilets for leaks
Put food coloring in your tank and wait a few hours to see if that color has bled into the bowl, if it has, that’s a sign that your toilet has a leak.
-Pour water down unused drains
Put water down drains that aren’t used often to fill the trap and prevent odors from entering the home. This is also a good time to see if any of your floor drains are clogged and draining slowly.
