As it begins to be colder outside, we’re starting to want more heat than AC. What we don’t want is our furnace to leave us cold at night when we think the heat is turned on. Here are a few things you can do yourself to check common problems homeowners encounter while using their furnace this season.
Check your thermostat
** Verify your thermostat is set to ‘Heat’
**Check and change the batteries if necessary.
**Blow out any dust or debris that has accumulated
Check your breakers
**Check to see if any of your breakers have tripped
**Flip the breakers to the ‘Off’ position, then back to ‘On’
Check your filter
**Locate your filter, remove it and hold it up to a light. If no light shines through, replace your filter
**Make sure your furnace is off, then replace your filter with the arrows pointing in the direction the air flows into your system
Check the pilot light
**If you have a gas furnace, check that your pilot light is lit. If it isn’t, instructions are usually printed on the furnace
Check the door
**Make sure the furnace door is fully closed so the safety switch isn’t activated preventing the system from running
If you’re able to fix your furnace issues by checking these 3 things, you’ve probably saved yourself a small chunk of change and time spent in the cold!
