Heating FAQs

We have compiled a list of frequently asked heating unit, heating service and repair questions.

Regular furnace maintenance is recommended to prevent breakdowns, ensure efficiency, extend the lifespan of the furnace, and maintain safe operation. A furnace that is not properly maintained can become a safety hazard, emit carbon monoxide, and lead to costly repairs or replacement.

It is recommended to schedule furnace maintenance at least once a year, ideally before the heating season begins. This will ensure that the furnace is operating efficiently and safely when it is most needed.

Furnace maintenance typically involves a professional technician inspecting and cleaning key components of the furnace, such as the blower, pilot light, and heat exchanger. The technician may also lubricate moving parts, check for gas leaks or other safety hazards, and replace air filters.

While some basic maintenance tasks such as changing air filters can be done by homeowners, it is recommended to have a professional technician perform annual maintenance to ensure the furnace is functioning safely and efficiently.

Regular furnace maintenance can increase energy efficiency, prevent breakdowns, extend the furnace’s lifespan, improve indoor air quality, and ensure safe operation. Additionally, it can lower heating costs and prevent the need for costly repairs or replacements down the line.

The most important thing you can do with your heating unit is to clean and replace your filters frequently. Also, a system heats and cools more evenly when the blower is in the “on” position. The heating blower provides constant air movement throughout the home, and allows for better filtration. Finally, shades, drapes, shutters, or screens should be installed on windows that may offer drafts or heat leaks.

During the winter, the heating unit’s evaporator coil is inactive, so some dirt accumulates. When the heating unit is turned on for the first time and condensation starts to run down the coil, a musty smell will occur until the dust and dirt has been rinsed off through normal operation. To prevent this, the system probably needs a better filtering system.

For optimum efficiency and filtration with your heating unit, we recommend that you replace your disposable filters at least once a month. If you have washable filters, they should be cleaned once a month.

To figure out just what the blinking red light on your furnace is trying to tell you, you can consult a chart that’s located somewhere on your furnace. The number of blinks should correspond to a similar number on the chart and that can help you begin to understand and solve the problem. If the manufacturer’s suggested fix does not work, consult an HVAC specialist who is highly trained to look at heating units to take a look at your heater.

If a furnace doesn’t turn on, this most likely points to an ignition system malfunction, which is an issue that should be seen to by an HVAC specialist who can properly replace your faulty heating unit pieces.

If your furnace is blowing cold air, it might be a sign that your furnace light is out. If it is, try relighting it to see if it remains lit. If it does not relight, contact an HVAC professional for further assistance. A trained heating unit technician can take a look at your furnace and see what needs to be done.
