Tips for Keeping your Home Cool

Home CoolTips for Keeping your Home Cool

If you haven’t seen already, our temperatures are heading into the triple digits in the next few weeks. That means that no matter the age or condition of your AC, it’s going to be working overtime to keep your house at the temperature set at your thermostat. There are a few things you can do to help alleviate the added workload your air conditioning system will soon endure and keep your home cool.

Keep your windows and door closed as much as possible. Opening windows and leaving doors open will let the hot air from outside into your home and cause the AC to have to work harder than it should.

Use blackout curtains and blinds to block sunlight. Letting the sun’s rays in during the daytime will give you natural light into your home, but also increase the ‘greenhouse effect’ and trap that heat from the sun in your home which will increase the workload for your AC.

Make sure vents are open and not blocked by furniture. Keep air vents open and make sure your furnishings aren’t inhibiting air flow into your rooms. If you have floor registers, check them periodically to make sure a pet hasn’t inadvertently closed a vent while trying to find a cool spot to lay in.

Check and replace your air filter regularly during peak AC season. Ensure a clogged air filter isn’t causing any restrictions and lack of air flow that can cause low air flow through vents of your indoor coil to freeze up.

Clean in and around your condenser. Spray off your condenser and make sure there isn’t excessive growth around it that would inhibit the condenser fins releasing your indoor heat back into the outside air.

If you feel like your AC just isn’t keeping up like it used to, give us a call at 785-341-4193 and let our technicians assess your air conditioning issues and get your home cooled down like it should be!
