SEER Rating and the Government’s Regulation on Air Conditioners
In January 2023, the Government made changes to HVAC efficiency effective. All new air conditioners are now required to have a minimum SEER rating of 14 in Northern states and 15 in Southern states. SEER stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio and is the ratio of the cooling output of air conditioners and heat pumps over a cooling season by the energy it uses in Watt hours. The higher a SEER rating, the more efficient the unit. The benefits of this change include positive environmental impact, reduced utility bills, and less work for units.
