Veterans and Red Poppies

slide-1The tradition of  veterans and red poppies goes back to a poem written in 1915.  The poem was written by Colonel John McCrae of the Canadian forces and is titled, “In Flanders Fields”.  The red poppy has become a familiar emblem honoring war veterans.  These poppies bloomed across some of the worst battlefields of Flanders during WWI.  Their brilliant color became a symbol for the blood spilled on the battlefield.  In 1924 the VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars), registered the name of the “Buddy Poppy” for the paper poppies that they distribute to honor veterans.  These poppies are assembled by disabled and disadvantaged veterans in VA hospitals.  The VFW Buddy Poppy program provides compensation to the veterans who assemble the poppies.  Donations made during poppy distribution days are used exclusively to assist and support veterans and their families.  So folks, next time you approach a veteran handing out the poppies as you are arriving or exiting a store, don’t just take that flower and keep walking. Be generous and purchase many poppies.  You will help a veteran in his or her attempt to live the peaceful life they deserve.  De Hart Plumbing, serving Manhattan Kansas, Junction City Kansas and Wamego Kansas.
