Temperatures will be dropping drastically the next few days to nearly set record lows across the Midwest. Luckily, the severe cold and below zero wind chill will only last a few days. Here are some Extreme Cold Weather Tips.
Frostbite and hypothermia can occur in only a few minutes of exposure to these frigid temperatures so it’s important to keep all skin covered and to stay dry. Be sure to wear plenty of warm layers if you do go outdoors. Store extra blankets, water, and non-perishable food in your vehicle if you will be travelling. Also, keep the fuel level in your vehicle above 1/2 a tank in the event that you get stranded.
For your home, open cabinet doors around pipes and leave the hot and cold water at a steady trickle, this also includes your shower and tub faucets. Consider putting a space heater near your washer if it is in a colder area of your home or in a closet. If your pipes do freeze, open all the water lines and use a blow dryer or space heater to help defrost pipes more quickly. Know where your main water shutoff valve is located in case a pipe bursts in the home but also where line shutoffs are for individual fixtures so you’re not completely without water in the home until a plumber can fix your pipes.
Stay safe and warm the next few days and if you find yourself in need of any plumbing or HVAC services, our technicians will be here to help!
