Roots from shrubs and trees will naturally grow toward your sewer line.  The pipes are a bountiful source of water, nutrients and oxygen that roots crave. When roots find a crack or break in your sewer line, they will grow quickly and inhibit the flow of waste causing blockages and further breaks. Root damage in sewer lines may cause overflowing tubs/showers and floor drains, slow-flowing drains and a gurgling noise coming from the toilet. Sewage will also leak into the ground causing an unsanitary situation.  Once you have a break in the sewer line, roots will continue to grow until the section of sewer is replaced. The best recommendation is to replace the whole sewer line versus just replacing a section when your sewer breaks or is invaded by roots.  When adding new landscaping, it is a good idea to call your local public works department to find the location of your sewer line to avoid planting near it.  Once you have roots in the sewer it is best to call a plumber to have the drain and sewer lines inspected with a sewer camera.  Once the inspection is complete the plumber will tell you the best course of action.  De Hart Plumbing, Heating and Cooling serving Manhattan Kansas, Junction City Kansas and Wamego Kansas.  De Hart Plumbing and Heating and Cooling - Manhattan, KS 66502
